Photography and Photobook News: Memory Card Mystery, iPad Won't Replace the Book, BEES! and Photographing Bubbles!

Read about a fascinating mystery when a camera turned up at a thrift store with a memory card in it. Someobdy found the card and got a couple hundred photos off of it.  With no reference at all there was a little detective work going on to try and find out who owned the camera and where they were and why the camera showed up at the thrift store.

According to WIRED in their article about Edward Burtynsky's amazing "Oil" photos, they have an interesting quote about the photos getting an iPad app:

"With app in hand, we were able to confirm the obvious — the iPad will never replace a print on the wall or a well-designed photo book."

This will give all book manufacturers, book binders and the like an extra kick in their step.  Nothing, not even an iPad app, can replace the real thing in your hands.  Even in 2012.

Over at a Milwaukee News site, they have an article talking about how children photography might be bad for children or detrimental.  Here's a bizarre quote from the article:

"At Shoot the Moon Photography artistic photos are possible. However, newborn photo shoots come with a warning, if not done the right way.


Babies are hanging from trees, or stuffed in jars," explains Vertz as she points to her computer screen and shows us potentially dangerous baby photos found all over the Internet."

Video: Vietnam War Photobook Interview with the photographer

Mark Jury felt he needed to get an up-close and personal view of the war in Vietnam.

"I didn't agree with the war particularly as it went on, but I thought it was going to be the overpowering experience of my generation," the Waverly resident said. "I was determined I was going to experience it."

In the summer of 1969, he got his wish. However, his yearlong stay wasn't spent clutching an M-16, but rather a few battered Nikons.

"Published in several languages, including German and Japanese, "Gramp" went on to win the ALA Notable Book Award and the World Understanding Award in the Nikon/University of Missouri Competition.

From books, Mr. Jury and his brother ventured into filmmaking. In 1981, they produced the feature-length "Chillysmith Farm," which was inspired by "Gramp." The film received the Blue Ribbon at the American Film Festival, CINE Golden Eagle and Best Film at the White House Conference on Aging Film Showcase."

Photobook and Photography Links: Leaf Peepers in Japan, Rising Waters and Olympics in China and Leopards in India

Enjoy the Links this week, we are going from the last Olympics, to Japan, back to China and then to India.


Photobooks of note: Leaf Peeper by Tim Bowditch

Such a journey is a Japanese tradition called Momijigari, where Japanese people visit scenic places in the autumn to see the leaves of trees turning red, says the photographer.

The images are accompanied by a text by de Kersaint Giraudeau, who shares "a story of insight, ignorance and blocked sinuses", in response to Bowditch's work.

The Rising Waters of the Yangtze

Nadav Kander: Yangtze, The Long River is a photography book, the size and weight of which matches the magnitude of the subject matter. Photographed between 2006 and 2008, Kander travelled along China’s largest river in a period of rapid transformation during the construction and completion of the Three Gorges Dam. The vast landscape photographs, too, highlight the sheer scale of a number of important tropes represented in the images: the size of the river, the millions of people living along the river, and the country’s unprecedented economic ambitions.

The photo, taken by Indian photographer Vinay S. Kumar, was initially submitted to Conservation India, a not-for-profit portal to enable conservation action. Intrigued by the picture, CI's editors sent it to researchers at Wildlife Conservation Society's India Program who have been running a tiger-monitoring program for over two decades – the longest in the world. Their huge database of camera trap pictures also includes hundreds of pictures of leopards.

A great, long, article that talks about the difficulties and rewards of being a photographer at the Olympics.

Security has become an ever-increasing necessity at any public event. The Olympics are a prime target for terrorism and even in 1996 security was tight. You may remember that there was a bombing in Centennial Park in the heart of Atlanta about mid-way through the games. My writer colleague from the magazine and I were there a few hours before the bombing (right at the spot where it happened). After the bomb went off, security was increased dramatically. Even those guards who knew you (after screening you and your bags many times a day for more than a week) were forced to require that every piece of equipment go through X-ray and then be taken out, lenses uncovered to see through, cameras opened, etc.

Photos and Photobook Links: Photo Storing Sites, NAPCP, Smelly Paper and Polaroid's New Camera

C/Net has a great comparison post for online photo storing sites.  They compare Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket, Snapfish and Shutterfly.  They include pros and cons for each company.

There was a photographer who won the baby photographer of the year from the National Association of Professional Child Photographers (NAPCP) and as a reward got her image in DOWNTOWN Manhattan!  Read about how she couldn't go to see her photo because she was too busy with her kids!  Take a minute and imagine one of your photos being on the side of a building!

Imagine getting a photo in the mail from a friend of a rose.  That might be nice.  But what if you actually started smelling roses.  Would that be weird?  Of course not, the paper came from Homewood Press!  That's right, this company created SCENTED PAPER!  Imagine a photobook of your mother's apple pie that actually smells like your mother's apple pie!  There's a list of smells here and we'll just list some of them and you can let your imagination go wild!

Guess the Occupation! - Internet's First Photobook Comic

That's right.  All of our jobs have tools that we use.  Whether it's the handcuffs of the police to the right index finger for the Librarian (so they can tell people SSSHHHHHHH! when they are loud) we all use tools.  But you as a photobook maker only need two simple tools.  A camera and a mouse for your computer.  It's as simple as that!  Nothing special!  Get Christmas presents done early.  Start a birthday photobook today!  Or work on your Summer 2012 photobook!

Photos of the month. June 2012 Colorado Fires.  I don't think anyone wants to make a photobook about this!  YIKES!

Digital Trends has a good post about making a photobook from your Facebook photos.  It looks pretty easy to use. Check it out!

The New York Times writes:

"Horacio Coppola, whose black-and-white photographs of the cafes, side streets and neon-lit boulevards of Buenos Aires in the 1930s, and of ordinary objects like a typewriter and a doll, introduced avant-garde photography to Argentina, died on June 18 in Buenos Aires. He was 105."

Interesting thing but one of his photos is a piece of twine and an egg.  I guess when you do it the first time, you become famous.  If I do that today I wouldn't be famous.

There's a really cool piece of news out there about an ONLINE Photography Class!  COOL!
